Camping in winter?

With the loss of an hours daylight and the weather truly turning towards winter I started to think if you had to bring your camping to an end for the winter months? So I had a look over Martin Doreys Camper Van Coast book to see what he had to on winter camping, especially with kids!

T25 and Ice go well together?

I think the jist of it was that you should make the most of the weather, if and when, it allows you to venture outside. Short days out and if your camper has been kitted out with insulation for the colder months, the occasional night away

Heater is obviously a must, and never use the stove as a heater either!

As we're still T25 less the closest we got to winter camping was locking up out static caravan in North Wales, which owing to its size and construction does tend to be on the chilly side in the autumn months and shouldn't be braved in winter with out little one.

Fuel economy on a 25 year old T25

So while the T25 still offers a cheap way into the life of camper vans, the pay off (or not) is the MPG that it offers. Looking at it basic 'brick' profile, it comes as no surprise that a 2.0 air-cooled petrol engine may only offer only 20 to the gallon. So the question is, how do you improve it and what's the best options?

Petrol engines.
If kept in good condition should offer 25 miles to the gallon, and at current prices that means a 200 mile round trip would cost something like £40 which isn't too bad, but surely the diesel would offer better MPG.
Diesel engines.
The answer here is obviously yes. But while the 1.6 offers much improved MPG with something like 30 to 35 MPG, making the same 200 mile journey something like £30, it is said that the standard engine is somewhat gutless for the T25s needs. People think that swapping out the standard engine out for the later 1.9TD can offer 35 to 40 MPG with speeds of 80mph easily capable.
While I'm not looking for major engineering feats and insurance complications, I will be looking for a standard diesel and look to have the fuel pump upgraded to help with economy. There's also the added option of bio fuels should you take the diesel route too!

Baby's and Campers

Having spent some time looking over blog sites, it looks like most people who have taken a baby with them in a camper haven't really found anything that allows them to let the little angel sleep on their own. Co sleeping or the use of an awning would appear to be the way to go with this.

However, our 3 year old is a different matter with many ingenious ways of keeping them in the top bed, or setting up alternative arrangements over the driver and passenger seats.

Does anyone else have suggestions for baby's and toddlers that means we can utilise the van on its own, and therefore allowing us to use the van till very late in the season?

Camper Vans and Kids

We are always looking for ways to spend time with our little boy (3) that helps get him out into the big wide world.

Thats what led us to the purchase of our static caravan (grandere than it sounds), which for the last year has been used as may weekends and weeks as we can squeeze in before the arrival (fingers crossed) of child number 2.

As keen (pre child) outdoor enthusiasts, with the likes of Climbing, Canoeing, Kayaking and Biking, it stuck us that we could further enhance the whole experience by getting ourselves a trusty Camper Van!

On the face of it, it looked (and still is) a great idea, the challenge right now is to see how we manage a small baby in the over all scheme of owning and using a VW Camper Van.

The basics should be easy enough to cover with the standard worries of Child and baby seat easy to cover so long as the rear seats have appropriate seat belts and the like. However the further concerns of sleeping in a small camper with children looks a little more difficult to skin. But then thats the idea of this Blog, yo help gather and share info about living with little ones in a Camper van (VW or not)

We don't even have a camper yet and this hinges on the sale of our BC (Before Child) toy car, an 2000 MGF in Green.

So fingers crossed I'll keep you updated with articles I find on the web and maybe you can help us out by passing on information you haver on the subject too?

Till next time
